Mapping
Prior to planning an energy project of any scale, one of the most important first-steps is to determine where the abundant resources exist. Over the past few decades AWS Truewind has worked tirelessly to develop and fine tune the science and art of wind resource mapping. AWS Truewind was among the first to pioneer the use of mesoscale numerical weather models for wind resource assessment, and through years of patient research and rigorous application in over 60 countries, our atmospheric scientists have brought the technology to its most advanced level. What is more, AWS Truewind is the only firm to have published dozens of studies objectively demonstrating the accuracy of its wind mapping systems at hundreds of monitoring stations.
For large regions, MesoMap® provides high-resolution maps and data bases allowing developers to select the best sites for their wind projects. Once a site is chosen, SiteWind® takes over, providing a more accurate picture of the wind resource than conventional wind flow models while remaining fully compatible with leading wind farm design and evaluation software.
Since their introduction, MesoMap and SiteWind have been applied in over 60 countries on six continents. The U.S. Department of Energy has selected the MesoMap approach to create a new national wind resource atlas, and has publicly recognized AWS Truewind’s mapping efforts as a key contribution to furthering the acceptance of wind energy as a significant component of the country’s future energy mix.
In June of 2008 AWS Truewind launched its innovative wind project siting application windNavigator®. This state-of-the-art web-based tool allows for the exploration of wind resources and purchase of high-resolution wind maps and data all via the internet.
